Summary

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside。 She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region。

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing。 But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemí’s dreams with visions of blood and doom。

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son。 Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past。 For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place。 The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness。

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind。

2。5/5 cool premise, but the characters were flat and I had a hard time connecting to them。

This book here!!!! If you liked Hereditary or Midsommer movies, you should read this book。 It is disturbing, weird and thrilling。 I LOVED IT。 A Strong woman character fighting to protect her family against an old evil。 Girl Power。 Well written。 Historical fiction too。 Such a delight。

so good。 so nasty。 incest was interesting。 didn’t like the way they romanticized rape but i guess bc of the plot it was supposed 2 b that way? took a little long 4 the plot to pick up but was so worth it。

Really really weird book。 I can get that it’s some people’s cup of tea, but definitely not mine。 The writing isn’t bad, but is jumpy and confusing at times。 Wouldn’t have finished it if it weren’t an audiobook。

The last 100 pages made ME feel like I ate the mushrooms

4。5 Stars。 Though the writing was admittedly a bit dense in the beginning, I appreciated the literary style and was able to finish the book and ended up loving it! The body and fungal horror was amazing and the tackling of eugenics was a feat of its own。 The villains were incredibly hatable and the heroines and Francis were equally as loveable。 When this book picked up, I truly could not put it down。 Noemí was so feisty and fresh and this book was an overall great time!

Very atmospheric - made we want to go stay in a creepy, haunted mansion。

This is a wild fiction book that kept the pages turning。 The ending felt a little dragged out but was good nonetheless。

What do I say about this book? It is a masterpiece。 I usually dislike literary fiction, but this is definitely an exception。 This is merely the story of Noemi, who visits her dear cousin Catalina, who has sent a letter to Noemi and her father in a feverish and panicked tone。 The cousin lives in the distant mountains of inner Mexico with her husband and his family in a grand, English style mansion, isolated from the rest of the town。 But there is something off with the family。 And there's somethi What do I say about this book? This book has a timeless feel - in fact, I didn't know it was set in the 1950s until the main characters mentioned what year it is。 That is a good marker of a great story。 And the characters! My god。 Such beautiful characters。 Everyone is well fleshed out。 Everyone has their good and bad sides。 But most importantly, our heroine is realistic and sympathetic。 I feel like authors who write young women seem to make them endlessly annoying and breathless, but Noemi reminds me of my sisters or my friends。 The other characters have this air of stern ambivalence about them (except for Francis, who is endlessly wonderful), that is only surrendered until the final third of the book。 I didn't think any of them were *bad people* per se, just different, until everything all fits into place。 The story develops and unfolds at a very cautious yet engaging rate, feeding you information about the house and history of the family, while making everything make sense juuust a little more as you read it。There was a point in the final quarter of the book where I was breathing heavily in tension and anxiety - my IRL flight/fight response triggered。 Such craftsmanship in this writing。 And to top it off, the ending was really lovely。 It made everything good。 This book is so good that it is one of the few books that made me exhale with relief once it was over。 I literally sat there and went "wow"。 I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this book to ANYONE。 EVERYONE must read this。 。。。more

The writing was lovely。 The setting lush and appropriately creepy。 The concept was clever and original。 The characters suitably mysterious for a gothic piece。 But it didn't quite work。 In the effort of prolonging the mystery, it became a bit plodding in places and too much was left to the final chapters。 The ending was rushed and the big twist was not quite believable。 2。5 The writing was lovely。 The setting lush and appropriately creepy。 The concept was clever and original。 The characters suitably mysterious for a gothic piece。 But it didn't quite work。 In the effort of prolonging the mystery, it became a bit plodding in places and too much was left to the final chapters。 The ending was rushed and the big twist was not quite believable。 2。5 。。。more

This was my first time reading this author。 As with another author that I have recently become familiar with I was encouraged to read another Gothic thriller。 I wanted to do this to justify my rating of Mexican Gothic。 I went back to The fall of the House of Usher。 Mexican Gothic follows well the tradition and I enjoyed reading it。 A young, pretty, upper class woman is faced with a complexing challenge。 The events in this book let us know if she is up to the many difficulties that face her。 All This was my first time reading this author。 As with another author that I have recently become familiar with I was encouraged to read another Gothic thriller。 I wanted to do this to justify my rating of Mexican Gothic。 I went back to The fall of the House of Usher。 Mexican Gothic follows well the tradition and I enjoyed reading it。 A young, pretty, upper class woman is faced with a complexing challenge。 The events in this book let us know if she is up to the many difficulties that face her。 All of the Gothic elements are present and handled well。 I will read more by this author。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I only finished this book to find out what happens to Francis。 I rolled my eyes so much during this read。 The main character is not well established and is strong when she needs to be for the plot to continue and weak and scared for the rest of the plot to continue。The book is really slow even during the last 4 chapters and it’s supposed to be scary but I didn’t feel anything towards anyone。I guess I haven’t read much gothic romance (except Barbara Michaels) and was really surprised this was put I only finished this book to find out what happens to Francis。 I rolled my eyes so much during this read。 The main character is not well established and is strong when she needs to be for the plot to continue and weak and scared for the rest of the plot to continue。The book is really slow even during the last 4 chapters and it’s supposed to be scary but I didn’t feel anything towards anyone。I guess I haven’t read much gothic romance (except Barbara Michaels) and was really surprised this was put up next to Rebecca。 It felt really forced and tried too hard at being gross that it was a dud。 Everything evil about a person was repeated multiple times。 I got it the first time Howard said it or did it that I didn’t need it repeated by every character in the book until the very end。 。。。more

I almost stopped listening more than once so 3 stars may even be a bit generous for my preferences。 Started a bit slow and then the end was super disgusting graphic。 Not my favorite。

I enjoyed many aspects of this book, especially the heroine。 I didn't love the writing, or the really gross parts at the end。 I didn't find it particularly frightening - I read it at bedtime - although it was horrifying in places。 Noemi travels to a scary old house to rescue her best friend Catalina, who is married to the owner and has sent a frantic letter to Noemi's father。 Noemi is a social butterfly, a fashion queen, and fiercely devoted to her friend。 My earliest genre love was romantic sus I enjoyed many aspects of this book, especially the heroine。 I didn't love the writing, or the really gross parts at the end。 I didn't find it particularly frightening - I read it at bedtime - although it was horrifying in places。 Noemi travels to a scary old house to rescue her best friend Catalina, who is married to the owner and has sent a frantic letter to Noemi's father。 Noemi is a social butterfly, a fashion queen, and fiercely devoted to her friend。 My earliest genre love was romantic suspense, and this book meets many of the qualifications for it, although light on the romance。 。。。more

Wish I would’ve read this in October。 V halloweenie read。Kind of haunting, pretty uncomfortable。 I’m sure there’s trigger warnings in other reviews, this one too。 Incest。 Forced intimate acts。 Probably wouldn’t read it again, even if it was Halloween。 Also, it wouldn’t be my first recommendation- but, with that said, I wouldn’t not recommend it。

This is a good haunting book。 I hold back from giving it 5 stars because to me it was fairly predictable。

I enjoyed this book until close to the end when the mushrooms were explained。 Yuck!!!!! What a disappointment。 Not the story I thought it was。

This was the second book of Silvia Moreno-Garcia that I have read。 The first book was "Gods of Jade and Shadow。" And I loved that book so much。 So, when I picked it up。 I had a lot of expectations。 。To be honest, the book was good。 Like really good。 It had twist and turns and a little bit of romance。 The historical aspects of this story was great。 But still I felt like the writing was not as good as Gods of Jade and Shadow。 That's why I am giving this book a 4 star。 But still it's a great read。 This was the second book of Silvia Moreno-Garcia that I have read。 The first book was "Gods of Jade and Shadow。" And I loved that book so much。 So, when I picked it up。 I had a lot of expectations。 。To be honest, the book was good。 Like really good。 It had twist and turns and a little bit of romance。 The historical aspects of this story was great。 But still I felt like the writing was not as good as Gods of Jade and Shadow。 That's why I am giving this book a 4 star。 But still it's a great read。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

No disappointment here - the hype is absolutely justified in my view。I loved High Place (the spooky mansion in this story) with its rotting decadence; a once wealthy place now abandoned。 And I relished the feeling of something not being quite right; the creepy atmosphere Morena-Garcia was wonderfully able to bring to life。 A fantastic gothic tale set in 1950 in rural Mexico - one of my favorites books this year!“Loyalty to the family is rewarded, and impertinence is punished。 Remember that and y No disappointment here - the hype is absolutely justified in my view。I loved High Place (the spooky mansion in this story) with its rotting decadence; a once wealthy place now abandoned。 And I relished the feeling of something not being quite right; the creepy atmosphere Morena-Garcia was wonderfully able to bring to life。 A fantastic gothic tale set in 1950 in rural Mexico - one of my favorites books this year!“Loyalty to the family is rewarded, and impertinence is punished。 Remember that and you shall be very happy。” 。。。more

Don’t waste your time。 I don’t often regret reading books, but I wished I had followed my instinct and abandoned this one early on。The characters are flat, the writing is dry, the setting is generic, and the plot is unbelievable。 I couldn’t find one redeeming quality about this book。

This is by far my favorite book since I started reading again。 Besides the cover catching my attention the premise and title was captivating as well。 I invested my imagination and soul into this novel going through the journey with Noemi。 Since the beginning of the story taking place in Mexico, I loved reading at least some authentic words of where my roots are from。 I loved everything about the book from Noemi's personality to the Gothic ambiance to the 1950's vibe with Guillermo Del Toro vibes This is by far my favorite book since I started reading again。 Besides the cover catching my attention the premise and title was captivating as well。 I invested my imagination and soul into this novel going through the journey with Noemi。 Since the beginning of the story taking place in Mexico, I loved reading at least some authentic words of where my roots are from。 I loved everything about the book from Noemi's personality to the Gothic ambiance to the 1950's vibe with Guillermo Del Toro vibes。 I felt like I was in High Place as Noemi。 I will go back in time just to feel what it was like to read it for the first time。 Silvia Moreno-Garcia will always have a special place on my bookshelf。 。。。more
